Job Description:

We are looking for a Senior Public Health Engineer who will be a part of our Building Services team and will be responsible for designing, managing, and delivering public

health systems for buildings and infrastructure projects. This includes developing systems for water supply, drainage, sanitation, and waste management while ensuring compliance with local regulations, environmental standards, and sustainability goals. This role will be based in Cairo, Egypt.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in mechanical / Building services engineering or a related field (Masters degree in Engineering is an added advantage).
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in public health engineering, with a track record of delivering high-quality designs and installations.
  • Experience with building services or infrastructure projects is preferred.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, and other relevant design/drafting software for accurate production of design deliverables.
  • Knowledge of international and local codes/standards such as BS EN, CIBSE, NFPA, IOP, IPC, UPC, IGBC, ASHRAE, UAE Fire & Life Safety Code, IFGC, ADM, and other authority regulations.
  • Experience in preparing and reviewing authority submissions for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and KSA projects, but not limited to these regions.
  • Familiar with hydraulic modelling and analysis software for system sizing and performance checks.
  • Awareness of sustainability frameworks such as LEED, WELL, and Estidama; certification in green building systems is a plus.
  • Skilled in preparing design calculations, drawings, material submittals, and technical documentation.

Responsibilities:

  • Design public health systems for water supply, drainage, rainwater harvesting, and waste management for buildings and infrastructure projects.
  • Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations using software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or similar tools.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, codes, and environmental

    sustainability requirements.
  • Collaborate with architects, mechanical engineers, and other stakeholders to integrate public health systems into overall project designs.
  • Coordinate with contractors during the construction phase to ensure proper installation and commissioning of systems.
  • Ensure all designs and installations comply with local building codes, health and safety regulations, and environmental standards.
  • Prepare technical reports and documentation for regulatory approvals and inspections.
  • Incorporate sustainable solutions such as water-saving technologies, greywater

    recycling, and energy-efficient systems into designs.
  • Evaluate and implement innovative technologies to enhance system efficiency and environmental performance.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to resolve issues during design, installation, and maintenance phases.
  • Conduct site inspections and provide recommendations to ensure project quality and compliance.

Summary:
The Clinical Infection Control Microbiologist will support the NAMRU-EURAFCENT's Viral and Zoonotic Diseases Research Program (VZDRP) by leading laboratory-based biosurveillance and infection control activities across Egypt, Eastern Mediterranean, and West African countries. This role involves clinical and research diagnostics, data analysis, external quality assurance support, site training and monitoring, and laboratory program development in collaboration with regional health institutions and international partners.

The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances.

Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:

  • Conduct and document laboratory testing (molecular, serological, virus isolation) for surveillance and research studies.
  • Enter test data into databases, perform statistical analysis, and prepare scientific reports.
  • Support and implement external quality assurance (EQA) programs across partner laboratories.
  • Perform diagnostic testing on specimens from diverse projects and regions.
  • Coordinate and conduct refresher and on-site training for surveillance procedures, equipment use, safety, biosafety, and specimen handling.
  • Conduct follow-up site visits to assess laboratory performance and ensure surveillance protocol adherence.
  • Review and report testing data regularly (weekly/monthly) to the Principal Investigator (PI) to evaluate study progress.
  • Oversee procurement of laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables, and manage inventory systems.

  • Design and monitor laboratory experiments, draft SOPs, analyze results, and advise on study modifications.
  • Lead molecular epidemiology studies of viral pathogens, including genetic and antigenic characterization, DNA sequencing, epitope prediction, and phylogenetic analysis.
  • Provide molecular biology and lab techniques training to NAMRU and external collaborators.
  • Assist with laboratory setup and capacity building efforts at partner sites within and outside Egypt.

Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctor of medicine and masters in microbiology.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience and practice in clinical and public health microbiology and its subspecialties.
  • 4 years of experience in healthcare associated infection and antimicrobial resistance surveillance in developing countries of the EM region.
  • Fluency in Arabic and English.
  • Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
